Clubhouse Apartments is one of the earliest
examples of a project on which Quad acted
as both architect and developer.
A white rendered, highly articulated block
of 7 apartments in the heart of Strawberry
Hill, the building displays clear links to
modernism, particularly in the use of a Corbusian
stair tower. The full height concave windows
that provide three of the apartments with
panoramic views over the golf course opposite
were carefully planned around the large Cedar
of Lebanon fronting the site. The dramatic
impact of the building’s white sculptural
form, set against a backdrop of mature evergreen
trees that included a Giant Sequoia as well
as more Cedars, was a significant driving
force behind the development of the design.
Clubhouse Apartments was initially met with
a degree of resistance from both the planning
committee and some neighbours, but soon after
completion attitudes shifted firmly in favour
of the building and now, after many years,
it is seen as a much loved local landmark.
